A pilgrimage through Ireland's sacred story

Some journeys are measured in miles. This one is measured in moments.

Over twelve unhurried days, we trace the threads of Ireland's Celtic and Christian past. We begin in Dublin with Christ Church Cathedral and the Book of Kells, then travel into the Wicklow Mountains to Glendalough, where St Kevin made his home in the 6th century.

At the heart of the journey are five days on St Declan's Way, an ancient pilgrim path that predates the Camino de Santiago by four centuries. Each evening we return to the peace of Glencairn Abbey, home to a community of Cistercian sisters.

The final days take us through the monastic South East: Duiske Abbey, medieval Kilkenny, Hook Lighthouse, Tintern Abbey and Ferns, where St Aidan founded his monastery.

This is Ireland at walking pace, with time to listen, to reflect and to share the road with fellow travellers. Phil and Elaine look after every detail, so all you need to do is show up.

Magical, enchanting, spiritual, educational, life-insipiring. . .I could simply go on and on about the amazing experience my sister and I had with Elaine and Phil and Celtic Ways. At every turn, there were surprises, planned and unplanned. A butler appeared at Lismore Castle to give us a surprise, intimate glance inside; a local happened upon us looking for Dervla Murphy's home and asked if we would like a peek; a cat joined us in an impromptu song at a local cathedral; on September 11, we found a piece of the twin towers, given to the people of Ireland, and we had a prayer there; we had tea and scones with the most delightful sisters at Glencairn Abbey; we met friends for walks and songs by lakes and rivers; we found a local historian able to help me with some facts about a book I'm writing; we wrote our names in Medieval ink in the ancient Ogham alphabet; we learned folklore and history; prayed and laughed, all while riding like queens in Nancy, the beautiful, huge van aptly named after the horse that gave us a ride to awe-inspiring Dunloe Gap. This is not your typical rushed tour of Ireland. It is thoughful, open for surprises, nuanced, balanced between everything from the paths of saints to the joy of pub music and drink. And there were rainbows. Like signs from the ancestors and loved ones and the actual true stereotype of Ireland's breathtaking beauty, rainbows followed us at every turn. And perhaps the best part, in the end, we quickly found an amazing kinship with Elaine and Phil. We started strangers but found that we shared so much in common and had so much to learn from each other, in ways completely unexpected. Their kindness, humor, ability to listen to our hopes for this trip, and openness to their own life, made this time extraordinary. They shared their friends, their voices, their stories, both personal and professional, their favorite spots---we started with a tour, but it quickly changed into two fun, warm friends showing us their amazing country. I have been forever changed for the better because of Elaine and Phil and the beauty, lore and story of Ireland.

Celtic Ways Ireland did a fantastic job of organizing and managing a unique experience which included seeing historically significant sites in Ireland with on site experts to describe the various sites. They provided a glimpse into Ireland's history as well as it's modern day people and towns which would not be available through other means.

Where do I even BEGIN! Our walk on St Declan’s Way with Phil and Elaine was, no exaggeration, life changing in some of the best ways possible. The walk itself was stunning and profound and meditative, but more than anything, it was the people and the relationships we built over the week that touched me most deeply. In only five days, we formed such a close bond with our small group of ‘strangers’, that by the time we finished our walk it was a very sad, reluctant, and teary goodbye. I believe this was, in large part, thanks to Phil and Elaine’s beautiful guidance over the week, through the history of the land and culture, to the people who have carried the most sacred values into the present day. These deep moments continued when the walking ended for the day through music, vulnerability, shared meals, personal stories, and humor that we think back on daily, now that we’re home. My only regret is that we hadn’t discovered Phil and Elaine earlier! Let this be your sign to take a leap of faith and give yourself the gift of walking the Irish Camino with these two genuine, insightful, generous, vibrant human beings.

Finding words to capture and communicate the experience of traveling with Phil and Elaine is almost impossible. My daughter and I walked St. Declan’s Way with them a week ago and our hearts are still so full that even the life we have returned to feels brighter, clearer, and more meaningful as a result. The walk itself was gloriously beautiful. Phil and Elaine worked together with so much care and harmony to ensure that every detail was in place that we felt genuinely held and looked after in every way possible. The group (who hadn’t known one another before the tour began) became extended family by midweek. The warmth, vivid peace, and hospitality of the sisters at Glencairn Abbey was like being absorbed in living prayer. And the humor, quick-witted repartee, and profound knowledge of each place and local culture from both Phil and the guides and characters he asked to join us at various turns, was spectacular! Sharing photos and stories with family and friends afterwards, the most frequent question was “how did you FIND this??“ Well, that was all part of the magic I suppose … If you’ve come as far as reading this review, and it rings a “true note“ in any way, my one recommendation would be: DON’T hesitate. Email Phil immediately 🙂

Walking St Declan's Way with Phil and Elaine was probably one of the most inspiring experiences we have ever had. We stayed in Glencairn Abbey, a haven of peace and tranquillity. We prefer not to list in detail what Phil and Elaine offered in order to avoid 'spoilers' as the camino was full of unexpected surprises and treats. However, some highlights must be mentioned, for example Elaine's organisation and support for all five pilgrims; he kindness throughout the week was ever reliable and often accompanied by warm infectious laughter. Nothing was left to chance. She helped to create the generous and continual camaderie in the group. Friendships were forged as a result. Phil's inspirational leadership of the reflections at key points in the pilgrimage was another highlight. These rich moments were usually accompanied by music (portable Bose system) to match the theme and the location. His encouragement, patience and understanding of the group were a key ingredient in building an atmosphere of trust, support and regular hilarity. It was uncanny how he matched the way to the needs of the each indvidual in the group. Each key location along the way saw the arrival of local guides with intimate knowledge of the history, geography and culture of each from the Rock of Cashel, through Ardfinnan, Cahir, the Knockmealdowns, Cappoquin, Lismore, Villierstown and Ardmore, over hills, through valleys and along the area's delightful rivers. It is impossible to capture the richness of the experience in a few words but stories told and confidences shared along the way contributed to the success of the pilgrimage and to lasting friendships. Finally, the nuns of Glencairn Cistercian Abbey, Lismore, provided the most gracious and thoughtful welcome that we have experienced on many Camino routes. We were made to feel at home from the moment we arrived. We enjoyed several lovely conversations in the Abbey, filled with humour and kindly thoughtfulness. Thank you Phil and Elaine. Míle buíochas. You are a great team. Go raibh míle maith agat.

I recently completed St Declan’s Way arranged by The Missionaries of the Sacred Heart and organised by Celtic Ways Ireland. Phil and Elaine are dedicated and attentive, they offer a high standard with a personal touch. I thoroughly enjoyed the walking, education and sheer fun of the experience. They introduced us to locals with knowledge and a love for their area. I would highly recommend Celtic Ways Ireland.

Phil and Elaine are truly the best! When I started planning our Ireland adventure, none of the other tours offered what we were after. We were looking to spend more time in fewer and more local places, which allowed us to see important sites, and also immerse ourselves in the Irish culture of today. Wow, did they deliver! We spent a total of 5 weeks in Ireland, and saw the most meaningful and gorgeous places, but more importantly, we met Irish people where they really live. The stories, hospitality, and genuine care that the people we were intentionally connected with served as second hosts when we landed in their areas. We made lifelong friends and felt like honorary Irish people! Even if you can't spend as much time as we did, I would recommend you avoid the "tour machine" and try this way of travel. Put your trust in the Celtic ways, as they will not disappoint you. Thank you, Phil and Elaine, for the most lovely vacation we have ever experienced. Gay Dering

01

Dún Laoghaire

Arrival into Ireland

Welcome to Ireland. Plan to land at Dublin Airport by late morning, in time for our 2pm transfer to Dún Laoghaire, a historic harbour town just south of the city.

You'll check in at the Royal Marine Hotel by mid-afternoon, with time for a gentle stroll along the pier to the lighthouse and a first breath of sea air. This evening we gather for a three-course dinner, meet our fellow pilgrims and talk about the road ahead.

Overnight: Royal Marine Hotel, Dún Laoghaire · Dinner

02

DUBLIN CITY

A day in Dublin

We begin at Christ Church Cathedral, founded by Viking Dublin around 1028 and still the spiritual heart of the old city. Walk the vaulted nave, descend into the 12th-century crypt, the largest in Ireland, and, if the timing is right, hear the cathedral choir fill the space with song.

From there we cross the city to Trinity College, where a guide brings the Book of Kells to life. This illuminated manuscript of the four Gospels is among Ireland's greatest treasures, created by Columban monks over 1,200 years ago. We finish with a guided walk around the grounds of Dublin Castle, once a fortress, court, treasury and jail.

03

Co. Wicklow

Glendalough and the story of St Kevin

Today we travel into the Wicklow Mountains to Glendalough, the valley of two lakes. In the 6th century, a hermit named Kevin came here seeking solitude. The community that grew around him became one of the great cradles of Irish monasticism, flourishing until the 12th century.

We arrive early, ahead of the crowds, to walk among the round tower, the stone churches and the high crosses while the valley is still quiet. In the afternoon we continue south to our base for the pilgrim days ahead, where the sisters of Glencairn Abbey welcome us with tea and homemade treats.

Overnight: Glencairn Abbey, Co. Waterford ) · Breakfast and dinner

04

ROCK OF CASHEL · THE GOLDEN VALE

Stepping out on the pilgrim trail · Rock of Cashel to Cahir (10 km)

We begin where Declan began: the Rock of Cashel, seat of the High Kings of Munster, rising from the plains of Tipperary. After a guided tour we take our first steps south — the very route Declan walked home to Ardmore — with lunch in an old churchyard and a tour of mighty Cahir Castle.

This evening, something unforgettable: a Vigil for Peace at the Abbey, with the voices of the Island of Ireland Peace Choir filling the ancient stones.

Face to face with the real Ireland · Cahir to Ardfinnan (8 km)

A riverside morning along the Suir on the Coronation Walk, then a visit to the Swiss Cottage, the Butler family's exquisitely restored country retreat. In Ardfinnan, local guide Conor joins us with refreshments made to order and stories that only a local can tell, before an afternoon walk to the ruins of Lady's Abbey.

Tonight, the finest of Irish traditions: fish and chips in a proper Irish bar.

Overnight: Glencairn Abbey · Breakfast, lunch and dinner

06

THE KNOCKMEALDOWN MOUNTAINS

Over the mountains · The Knockmealdowns to Mount Melleray (12 km)

The pilgrim's test — and the pilgrim's reward. From the Liam Lynch Memorial we climb into the Knockmealdowns, six hours of undulating, beautifully picturesque terrain with panoramas that are simply stunning, guest guide Mark opening our eyes to the natural world around us.

We descend at last into the wooded surrounds of Mount Melleray Abbey, with dinner together at 6:30pm and the deep sleep only a mountain day can give.

Overnight: Glencairn Abbey · Breakfast, lunch and dinner

07

LISMORE & THE BLACKWATER

The monastic city of Lismore · Lismore to the Blackwater (6 km)

Lismore was a great centre of learning in the time of St Carthage, drawing scholars from across Europe. Alice from Lismore Heritage Centre guides us through the town and St Carthage's Cathedral, before we follow the River Blackwater, once the route pilgrims took towards Youghal and on to Santiago. In the afternoon, choose between kayaking beneath the castle or a tour of the Lismore Castle Gardens.

08

ARDMORE · CO. WATERFORD

Ardmore and the story of St Declan (7 km)

Ardmore Round tower at the end of St. Declan's Way

The sea at last. We gather at St Declan's Holy Well to mark the moment, then take the cliff path around to the monastic ruins and round tower, where local historian James tells the story of the saint who founded his settlement here. After lunch by the water and your St Declan's Way certificate, we travel to the Ashdown Park Hotel in Gorey for the final chapter of our journey.

Overnight: Ashdown Park Hotel, Gorey · Breakfast, lunch and dinner

09

BAILEY'S FARM CO. WICKLOW

Farm life and an ancient well · Wicklow

Ardmore Round tower at the end of St. Declan's Way

Today we're guests of the Hayden family, whose Wicklow farm has been worked for more than 150 years and whose dairy herd supplies the cream for Baileys. Joe and his team host us for lunch and a walk around the farm. Beside the farmyard lies St Patrick's Well, said to have been blessed by the saint himself and still a place of prayer today.

Then it's time to try hurling, Ireland's ancient Gaelic sport, with local players on hand to coach us, followed by a barbecue on the farm and a taste of the famous cream liqueur.

Overnight: Ashdown Park Hotel, Gorey · Breakfast, lunch and dinner

10

BAILEY'S FARM CO. WICKLOW

Village of the Monks · Duiske Abbey and Kilkenny

Ardmore Round tower at the end of St. Declan's Way

We travel to Graiguenamanagh, the "village of the monks" on the River Barrow. Duiske Abbey, founded by Cistercian monks in 1204, is one of the largest and finest of Ireland's medieval Cistercian abbeys and is still a working parish church. A short stroll away, a member of the Cushen family shows us around Cushendale Woollen Mills, one of only two mills in Ireland still taking wool from fleece to finished fabric under one roof.

The afternoon is yours in Kilkenny, Ireland's medieval capital. Walk the Medieval Mile, visit Kilkenny Castle and St Canice's Cathedral, or raise a glass at Smithwick's, where the city's brewing story goes back to the monks of the 13th century.

Overnight: Ashdown Park Hotel, Gorey · Breakfast and lunch

11

CO. WEXFORD

The wonders of Wexford

Hook Lighthouse Co. Wexford Ireland

We begin at Hook Head, where monks led by St Dubhán lit warning fires for passing ships as far back as the 5th century. The lighthouse that stands there today has guided sailors for around 800 years and is one of the oldest working lighthouses in the world. Climb its 115 steps for views along the coast, then take lunch looking out to sea.

At Tintern Abbey, founded around 1200 by William Marshal, we wander beneath 200-year-old beech trees to the Colclough Walled Garden, or take the 7 km Bannow Bay trail. We end the day at Ferns, where St Aidan founded his monastery in the 6th century, and hear the story of the saint and his bees.

12

THE FINAL DAY

Slán abhaile (safe home)

Hook Lighthouse Co. Wexford Ireland

After breakfast, your private transfer leaves for Dublin Airport, about 90 minutes away. We recommend booking a flight from mid-morning onwards to allow plenty of time for check-in. Time to say goodbye, a little lighter and a little steadier than when you arrived.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Celtic Pilgrimage Tour in Ireland.

Is this journey for you?

The Celtic Pilgrim Experience is for anyone looking for more than sightseeing: travellers drawn to Ireland's sacred places, walkers who like to take their time, and anyone in need of space to breathe.

  • Gentle walking. Five walking days, with options from 2 km to 12 km each day. You'll need a moderate level of fitness and good walking shoes.
  • Every faith and none. The journey has Christian roots, but everyone is welcome wherever they are on their own path.
  • Solo travellers welcome. Many of our pilgrims travel alone and leave with lifelong friends.
  • Small group. We keep numbers small so everyone is known by name.

Do I need to be Catholic or religious to join?

No. The tour is run in partnership with the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart and includes moments of prayer and reflection, but all are optional. Pilgrims of every faith and none are welcome, and many join simply for the walking, the history and the company.

How much walking is involved?

There are five walking days on St Declan's Way, between 6 km and 12 km each, and every walk can be shortened to as little as 2 km. The mountain day over the Knockmealdowns is the most demanding, and a gentler alternative is always available. The other seven days involve only light walking at the sites we visit.

Do I need rainwear for walking in Ireland?

Yes. Irish weather can be unpredictable, even during summer months.

Lightweight rainwear or a waterproof jacket is highly recommended for all Saint Declan’s Way walking tours to ensure guests remain comfortable throughout the journey.

As we often say in Ireland, it is always best to be prepared for a little rain.

Can I book Saint Declan’s Way as an individual traveller or do I need to be part of a group?

Yes, individual travellers are very welcome on Saint Declan’s Way with Celtic Ways Ireland.

Many guests join the experience as solo travellers looking for connection, reflection, and meaningful travel in Ireland. Others travel as couples, friends, or small private groups.

Celtic Ways Ireland creates a warm, welcoming, and supportive atmosphere where guests quickly feel comfortable walking and sharing the journey together. The experience is carefully paced and designed to encourage conversation, relaxation, and genuine connection without ever feeling overwhelming.

For those travelling alone, Saint Declan’s Way often becomes a wonderful opportunity to meet like-minded people while still enjoying personal space and quiet reflection throughout the journey.

I need a reset from busy life - is this tour for me?

Absolutely.

Many guests choose this tour because they are looking to step away from busy schedules, constant noise, stress, and the fast pace of modern life.

This experience perfectly reflects the spirit of #irelandunrushed.

Walking through the peaceful landscapes of Ireland’s Ancient East allows guests to slow down, breathe deeply, reconnect with nature, and experience Ireland at a gentler pace.

The combination of walking, conversation, quiet moments, spiritual reflection, local hospitality, and beautiful countryside creates an environment where many guests feel rested, grounded, and reconnected by the end of the journey.

You do not need to be religious or experienced in pilgrimage walking to enjoy the benefits of the tour. Many guests simply come seeking space to think, time to recharge, and an opportunity to reconnect with themselves in a meaningful and supportive environment.

Are airport transfers included?

Yes. A group transfer leaves Dublin Airport at 2pm on Day 1, and a private transfer takes you back to Dublin Airport on Day 12. Please book flights to arrive by late morning on Day 1 and to depart from mid-morning onwards on Day 12.
